Copenhagen:
Danish police said Friday that seven people suspected of being involved in a planned terrorist attack that Danish authorities foiled in December have ties to the Islamist movement Hamas.
Danish prosecutor Anders Larsson confirmed that the case had “a link to Hamas,” Danish police told AFP in a statement.
On Friday, prosecutors made their arguments at Denmark’s Eastern High Court, while the case was being heard behind closed doors.
Police announced on December 14 that they had arrested three people in Denmark on suspicion of planning a “terrorist” attack, but gave no other details.
A total of seven people are currently suspected of being involved.
The prosecutor’s statement echoed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments on Dec. 14 that Danish security forces “thwarted an attack aimed at killing innocent civilians on European soil.” This seems to support this.
“The terrorist organization Hamas is persistent and aggressive in expanding its deadly operations into Europe, thereby posing a threat to the internal security of these countries,” Netanyahu said.
Denmark’s Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said on Friday that the alleged ties to Hamas “confirm that the threat to Denmark is serious, but fortunately we have strong police and intelligence services that support us every day.” We are doing our best to protect it.”
