Denmark announced the Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI) initiative, with the aim of strengthening cooperative efforts between the two countries in the field of sustainable energy solutions and advancing the joint global goal towards carbon neutrality.
The new partnership, led by the Embassy of Denmark and the Consulate General of Denmark in India, will advance the green fuel sector, including green hydrogen, by fostering innovation, cooperation and partnership between Danish industry and Danish industry. This is a strategic initiative poised to play a vital role in the future. their counterparts in India.
GFAI’s main objective is to foster sustainable energy growth in India by establishing an ecosystem that fosters collaboration between companies, government agencies, research institutes and financial players from both the Indian and Danish sectors. .
Nine pioneering Danish organizations have already joined the GFAI initiative as founding members, including Maersk, Topsoe, Umwelt Energy, Mash Makes, European Sustainable Solutions, Novozymes, Danfoss and Brdr. Christensen and Hydrogen Denmark. Meanwhile, GFAI’s advisory board members include the Indian Hydrogen Alliance, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras Energy Consortium, the Danish Energy Agency, and the State of Green.
GFAI’s announcement comes at an opportune time in India’s history, with India making a major push towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2070. Meanwhile, Denmark topped the global climate performance rankings in 2024 and is on track to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
GFAI is a demonstration of activities under the Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) signed in 2020 between India and Denmark, which aims to achieve the partner countries’ ambitious climate goals.
His Excellency Freddie Sveen, Ambassador of Denmark to India, hopes that such international cooperation has the potential to significantly contribute to the global green transition. “Our planet needs action. The Tamil Nadu Investor Summit will be held at this crucial crossroads. Danish companies are bringing their skills to the green transition around the world. We are pleased to see a special effort to stimulate India’s green development efforts through the Green Strategic Partnership. Green Fuels Alliance India is advancing efforts in the energy transition. “I hope it’s moving,” he said.
The main features of GFAI are:
- It features a steering committee comprised of Danish companies and coordinated by the Secretariat of the Danish Consulate General in Bangalore.
- An advisory board of industry experts and thought leaders ensures that initiatives remain innovative and in line with industry trends.
- Inspired by joint initiatives such as the India-Denmark Energy Partnership, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, and joint research and development on green fuels, including green hydrogen.
Maersk’s 2040 net zero ambitions
Maersk has set net-zero greenhouse gas emissions targets by 2040 across its operations, and has also set specific and ambitious short-term targets for 2030 to ensure significant progress. Masu.
Every year, 100,000 ships carrying 300 million tonnes of fossil fuels transport 11 billion tonnes of goods around the world. This results in approximately 1.076 billion tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year from shipping, which is approximately 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Maersk is committed to contributing to net-zero transport by powering ships with green fuels and remains committed to ordering only new vessels that can run on green fuels.
Maersk will introduce the world’s first dual-fuel vessel capable of running on green methanol in 2023, and the world’s largest vessel capable of running on green fuel, a 16,000 TEU (20-foot equivalent container) vessel, is scheduled to enter service in February 2024. is. Maersk has secured enough Green 1 methanol to cover this vessel’s maiden voyage and remains committed to her 2024-2025 procurement solution for methanol-capable vessels. In addition to these two ships, 23 more ships are on order and will be added to the fleet as soon as they are built.
Tess Laustsen Jensen, CEO of Hydrogen Denmark, the Danish green fuels cluster organization on GFAI’s advisory board, said: This partnership represents a strong collaboration between nations, bridging expertise and resources to accelerate the deployment of green energy solutions to power tomorrow’s society. This is an important topic, as India and Denmark have much to gain from each other, and as global frontrunners, both countries have particularly much to contribute to global decarbonization efforts. ”
Jillian Evancho, president and CEO of Chart Industries (NYSE: GTLS) and founding member of the Indian Hydrogen Alliance (IH2A), said: electronic fuel. Decarbonizing maritime transport is a key use case for green hydrogen, and we look forward to supporting this effort, which we hope will accelerate the mass extraction of hydrogen derivatives and e-fuels in and within India. . Long-term offtake agreements are key to creating a hydrogen economy in India. ”
With green fuels gaining attention in India, GFAI is actively promoting knowledge sharing, business opportunities, and strategic and financial partnerships between Indian and Danish stakeholders in the field of green fuels, including green hydrogen. Masu.
