Danish Railways (DSB) has announced the Talgo 230 intercity train, which has been ordered to serve Denmark’s international routes.
At a press conference in Copenhagen, the company announced the official start of dynamic testing of the train.
The first units of the 16-member fleet will arrive in Denmark in December 2023.

The new Talgo 230 unit has a design speed of 230 km/h and an operating speed of 200 km/h. Thanks to rolling assembly technology and lightweight carriages, energy consumption can be reduced by up to 30% compared to industry standards.
They are also wider than standard cross-border vehicles, providing more interior space and improved passenger comfort.
The upcoming certification process will validate the train’s systems and ensure a high level of reliability and full technical compatibility with Danish infrastructure.
In the second phase, a Talgo driver bogie will be added to each train in a push-pull configuration, reducing train turnaround times at the end of each route.
Under the framework agreement to procure new trains, DSB has placed three orders with Talgo. In February 2020, the company ordered eight complete Talgo 230 trains for 134 million euros.
In April 2021, in response to the growing demand for international travel, DSB decided to expand its fleet size by ordering additional coaches, increasing the passenger capacity of its trains by 10 percent to 492 seats each.
Then, in April 2023, the railway company placed a third order for eight additional trains worth €184 million.
The new trains are expected to connect Copenhagen, Aarhus and Hamburg, and may also serve other international and domestic routes in the future.
