Danish authorities will shut down Pusher Street, a notorious drug market in Copenhagen’s hippie sanctuary Christiania, this year, the justice minister announced on Tuesday.
“Pusher Street will be closed this year,” Peter Hummelgaard told Cosmopol TV2.
Soft drugs such as marijuana and hashish are officially illegal but tolerated in the enclave, leading to problems with drug trafficking and organized crime.
In August, a 30-year-old man with ties to organized crime was shot dead in Christiania.
This is the fourth fatal shooting linked to the Pusher Street drug market since 2020, and about 900 Christiania residents have appealed to authorities to stop the trade.

The minister said an action plan worked out with residents was being implemented and should be completed “within the next six months”.
Christiania has been a “freetown” since 1971, when a group of hippies and artists converted an abandoned barracks in central Copenhagen.
They wanted to establish an alternative society, guided by principles of peace and love, where decisions were made collectively and laws were not enforced.
