There is no doubt that Margrethe II has a flair for drama, as she abdicated the Danish throne after 52 years on the very same day she became queen, announcing her surprise decision on live television with just two weeks’ notice. There’s no way.
After signing the abdication declaration last weekend, she left the room with tears in her eyes and the words, “God bless the King.”
The now popular royal was given The Crown treatment when her life became the subject of a fictional series.
TV show – tentative title Oh, no more (By the Grace of God) – is being developed by Sam Productions, makers of Borgen, and Danish broadcaster TV2. The story begins with Margrethe’s birth in 1940 and is set at Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the royal family in Copenhagen.
Producers say the story will be told from the perspective of members of the royal family and palace staff, and that the series will “embrace the royal family, for better or for worse.” Above all, this is a story about a girl and her family.
The announcement comes less than a week after Denmark’s longest-serving monarch, Margrethe, abdicated at the age of 83 and handed over the throne to her 55-year-old son Frederick X and his wife, the new Queen Mary. Ta. She became the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to voluntarily abdicate.
Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of Copenhagen on Sunday to bid farewell to her as she left the Danish parliament at Christiansborg Palace.
Oh, no more It has been in development for a year and a half and is expected to be released next year.
The show’s executive producer, Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen, who also produced the 2012 Oscar-nominated drama Royal Affair starring Alicia Vikander, said the former queen was “an all-Danish It was part of human history.”
“Whether you’re a Royalist or not, and however you interpret it, she means a lot to us as a people, not just in our little duck pond, but in the world.” she said.
“We never expected a little princess to become queen, but times have changed and she has become a great queen. Now is the time to tell an epic story that will give us insights never before possible. It’s time to talk.”
Sam Productions declined to say how the series would compare to Netflix’s popular series about the British royal family, saying it was “an epic story about Queen Margrethe and the historical events since her birth in 1940. “It will be,” he only revealed.
Margrethe was born as a princess in Nazi-occupied Denmark to parents who were then Crown Prince and Crown Princess, and later became King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid. Her cousin is King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
After becoming heir to the throne as a teenager, she became queen at the age of 31 after her father’s death, following a constitutional amendment that allowed women to succeed.
Pernille Beck Christensen, Senior Executive Producer at TV2, said she hoped the series would help viewers clarify their Danish identity, calling the series “a way for us Danes to understand who we are”. “It’s an important story about everyone.”
She goes on to say, “This is a story of a family, a story of an institution, and an anachronism struggling to maintain relevance in modern times. The royal family, whether supporters, opponents, or somewhere in between, , shared by all Danes, and still a rallying point for Danes today.
“TV2 hopes that this series can contribute to a deeper understanding of the importance of the Royal Family to us as Danes and how social development has spread in both directions.”
