The Sperrin Mountains are Ireland’s largest and an area of unspoiled natural beauty. This deep historical connection is symbolized by a series of interesting sculptures along the trail.
Scattered throughout the mountain are three mighty and majestic giants. The Sperrin Giant Sculpture Trail introduces the epic stories and inspiring landscape qualities associated with the Sperrin Tribe.
The giant was designed to represent the past, present, and future.
The first giant is Nowanoi, the Seanchai, or storyteller, who reminds us of a bygone era and generation.
The second person is Darach, a guardian who watches over the present. The third and final giant is Theordan, a stargazer who gazes into the future and the unknown.
The giants are inviting visitors to reflect on the stories of generations of people who have helped shape the landscape of Sperrins, on the border of Tyrone and Derry islands. These encourage visitors to be present and value the permanence of the landscape.
This trail is a great opportunity to introduce the whole family to Irish folklore and the country’s stunning scenery. The giant sculptures provide added entertainment for young people who wander along the trail, anticipating the next sculpture looming in the distance.

Renowned artist Thomas Dumbo is in charge of the figure design. Councilor Errol Thompson, Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, said: “We believe the Sperrins Sculpture Trail will be a great experience for people of all ages and will be a major attraction for Omagh and Sperrins for generations to come.”
“This investment will help support our rural economy and further our ambition to make Sperrin Islands the destination of choice for adventure tourism for visitors and tourists from near and far.”
