On the eve of her abdication, Queen Margrethe was seen listening to the national sing-along in Copenhagen.
The 83-year-old royal ruled Denmark for more than 52 years, becoming Europe’s longest-reigning monarch after Queen Elizabeth passed away in September 2022.
The monarch announced the news during a traditional New Year’s Eve speech.
The ceremony will take place on Sunday, where she will hand over the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederick, 55, and his Australian-born wife Mary, 51.
Danish royalists took to the streets of Copenhagen this weekend, waving red and white flags in honor of their beloved Queen Margrethe.
A video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed members of the public singing to Margrethe outside Amalienborg, her winter residence.
One of the windows to the palace was wide open, so I could hear people coming to sing.
The queen, known for her chain-smoking and flamboyant style, was seen in the video walking around her home looking out at the crowds.
Margrethe has said in the past that she would remain on the throne for the rest of her life, but did not reveal the exact reason for her decision to abdicate.
But she said undergoing major back surgery last February made her think about her future.
“After undergoing surgery, I naturally started thinking about the future. Is it time to hand over responsibility to the next generation?” she said in a speech.
“I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after succeeding my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark.
“I will pass the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”
Queen Margrethe took the throne in 1972. Denmark’s first monarch in 900 years to abdicate the throne.
However, in a 2016 interview she expressed a different opinion.
She said: “It’s always been that way. As long as you live, you’re there.” That’s what my father and my predecessors did. And my view is the same. ”
“She may think that Prince Frederik is ready to take over now,” said Lars Hovbacke Sorensen, a historian and associate professor at Denmark’s Absalon University.
“He’s 55 years old and the Queen probably wanted to avoid a situation where she had a very old king, as she did with Prince Charles.”
Denmark’s new royal couple will take the throne amid overwhelming public support and enthusiasm for the monarchy.
The latest poll, conducted after the Queen announced her abdication, found that 82% of Danes expect Frederick to do well in his new role, while 86% said the same about Mary.
“The royal family means everything about Denmark. It’s a fairy tale, it’s a tradition,” said Anna Karina Laursen, 59, in honor of the country’s famous fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen. Told.

Frederik is scheduled to give a short speech before the new king and queen return to the palace in a horse-drawn carriage.

Built in the 1750s, Amalienborg Palace is located in central Copenhagen and consists of four palaces built around an octagonal courtyard.
This is the home of the outgoing Queen and the new reigning couple.
But royal experts said the Queen of Denmark had broken an “invisible pact” between the Scandinavian monarchs to never abdicate.
Roger Lundberg told STV that after the change of government in Denmark, Norway’s King Harald, 86, and Sweden’s King Carl Gustaf, 79, followed suit and abdicated to allow their firstborn sons to inherit the throne. He said it is possible.
