Employment at Enterprise Ireland’s client companies rose to a total of 225,495 people in 2023, a record high.
The total number of jobs created was 15,530. Taking into account job losses, in a very difficult year for companies, the net employment figure was a positive result of 5,011 people.
The results were announced today at APC VLE’s headquarters in Cherrywood, Dublin, by Simon Coveney, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and Leo Clancy, CEO of Enterprise Ireland. Eight out of nine regions recorded net employment growth, with particular strength in the West (+5%), Northeast (+5%) and North West (+4%). 68% of new jobs created in Enterprise Ireland supported businesses in 2023 were outside the Dublin area.
Each of Enterprise Ireland’s three main sectors recorded an increase in employment, with 66,047 jobs (+3%) in Food and Sustainability, 93,652 jobs (+2%) in Industry and Life Sciences, and 93,652 jobs (+2%) in Technology and Services. Employing 65,796 people (+2%).
The climate change, sustainability and agritech sectors performed well, with employment increasing by 7%, while FDI in dairy, beverages and food also increased by 5%.
Employment increased by 4% in life sciences companies, and by 3% in the high-tech housing and construction sector.
The digital technology and fintech sectors continued to grow modestly at around 2% despite headwinds in the tech industry, with international education and edtech reporting job growth of 5%.
It is positive that Enterprise Ireland supported businesses have recorded employment growth for the third consecutive year.
Announcing the 2023 employment results this morning, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Coveney (TD) said: 2023 was a particularly difficult year for Irish exporters, with rising input costs, high interest rates and international instability among other challenging issues that affected performance.
“The Government is determined to support businesses to face these challenges and continue to create high quality jobs in every region of Ireland.
