The mid-term evaluation of the Green Deal on zero-emission workplaces shows that Finland has achieved almost all of the agreement’s interim targets, the government said. Electrification of machinery is an important tool to completely phase out fossil fuels.
According to the evaluation, 93% of respondents believe that all or part of the interim goals have been achieved.
All operators participating in the agreement use the concept of emission-free workplaces as part of their operations.
Monitoring systems are used and approximately half of the operator’s work sites are partially fossil fuel-free.
To reduce harmful emissions, work sites are starting to use construction equipment that meets Stage IV standards and trucks that comply with Euro VI standards as a minimum requirement.
According to the assessment, electrification of machinery will be an important means to achieve the remaining goals. The main challenge here is the development of electrical machines and their availability within the time period required by the agreement.
To accelerate electrification, we need more operators to commit to the agreement. New operators increase their ambition level by setting new actions and more ambitious goals. Achieving the goals also requires concrete actions and development proposals, as well as evaluation of results and impacts.
The ambitious goals of the agreement were maintained.
According to the Emission-Free Worksite Agreement, the workplaces of companies that comply with the agreement must be fossil fuel-free by 2026.
In addition to this, the aim is for 50% of workplace machinery and transport operations to be powered by electricity, biogas or hydrogen by the end of 2030.
The goals set in the agreement will also encourage us to develop our business and build cooperation with research institutes and other companies in the future.
Emission-free workplace agreements have been introduced to reduce emissions from sites. The Ministry of the Environment, the Senate Property Office and the cities of Espoo, Helsinki, Turku and Vantaa signed this voluntary agreement in 2020.
Subsequently, Helsinki Regional Environmental Services HSY, Metropolitan Area Transport Limited and Hellen Limited joined the agreement.
The Finnish Ministry of the Environment said it is committed to carrying out interim evaluations of all voluntary agreements to monitor the impact and results of the measures and estimate how the actions will proceed in the final years of the agreements. .
The mid-term evaluation of the Agreement on Zero-Emission Worksites was carried out as a thesis study for the Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management at the Novia University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the KEINO Competence Center.
