Finnish and Chinese presidents engage in constructive talks over Baltic Connect pipeline case
Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the damage to the Baltic Connector pipeline, a vital link between Finland and Estonia, during important talks. The Hong Kong-registered container ship NewNew Polar Bear has become the focus of controversy after Finnish authorities suspected damage.
Pipeline accident investigation
An anchor believed to belong to a Chinese ship was found close to the damaged pipeline. This led researchers to theorize that the damage may have occurred as the anchor was dragged across the ocean floor. Despite mounting evidence, it remains unclear whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
China promises full cooperation
Last year, China promised Finland full cooperation in investigating the pipeline accident. This commitment was reiterated during a recent meeting between the two presidents, underscoring the positive outlook for bilateral dialogue on this issue.
Beyond the pipeline: global politics and cooperation
The pipeline incident wasn’t the only topic of their conversation. The two presidents delved into a wide range of other bilateral and global political issues. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that President Xi expressed China’s intention to strengthen cooperation with Finland and thereby contribute to global stability in the complex international situation. Interestingly, the broadcaster did not mention the pipeline issue.
Niinistö and Xi also discussed the global geopolitical situation, climate change, the war in Ukraine, and relations between the EU and China. They emphasized the importance of genuine, constructive and transregional dialogue in solving and preventing global challenges.
