As a result of gas market reforms agreed in December 2023, Finland could stop purchasing Russian LNG in 2025.
Azel News I will report it.
Helsingin Sanomat reported this from the words of Minister of Climate and Environment Kai Mikkanen.
“I don’t want to commit to a specific date, but I hope that we will be in a situation where the ban will come into effect next year,” the minister said.
He said a simpler solution would be for the European Union to introduce appropriate sanctions, but some countries are not ready for that.
The minister stressed that although Finland imports a small amount of Russian LNG, “this issue is not important.”
The gas reform allows EU countries to ban pipelines and purchases of liquefied natural gas for security reasons. The regulations are expected to come into force in the spring, after which governments will be able to submit proposals to ban imports for a limited time. Latvia and Lithuania have already banned imports of Russian gas, but Finland wants gas market reforms to take effect to make decisions easier and provide more legal certainty.
Russia sold about 16 million tons of LNG to European countries in 2023. Combined with a decline in pipeline gas pumping, LNG supply increased. The largest buyers of his LNG in Russia were Spain (where he ranked first among other suppliers), France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The pipeline gas supply contract from Russia to Finland ended in May 2022.
