Finland’s Alametsa MP calls for Israel to be excluded from Eurovision

Must read

Finnish Green Party European Parliament member Alvina Alamezza joined a chorus of Finnish musicians calling for Israel’s exclusion from the Eurovision Song Contest. Alametsa argues that Finland and its national broadcaster YLE have the ability to influence this decision within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Alamezza’s statement comes in the wake of a Save the Children report that says an average of 100 children will be killed every day in Gaza by 2023.

“A nation responsible for the deaths of so many children should not be able to participate in May’s Eurovision Song Contest as if nothing had happened,” Alamezza said.

Just as Russia was excluded from Eurovision in 2022 following allegations of war crimes, Alamezza believes similar standards should apply to Israel. She said: “Countries suspected of war crimes should not be allowed to participate in the contest. This criterion must also apply to Israel. Finland and YLE can play a role in this decision through the EBU.” she added.

As a Member of the European Parliament, Alamezza expressed his belief that the Eurovision Song Contest is a platform to promote European unity and provide entertainment. “But neither unity nor joy can address Israel’s killing of children, war crimes, and other oppressive acts,” she concluded.

Her stance stands out among some European officials and artists who see cultural events like Eurovision not only as festivals of music and diversity, but also as platforms where political and humanitarian standards should be upheld. It highlights the heightened emotions of Alamezza’s call to action reflects a broader debate about the intersection of politics, human rights, and cultural events on the international stage.
