Finland – Bodom Bar and Sauna in Espoo, Finland is home to the melodic death metal band Children of Bodom. With poster-studded walls, red leather sofas and band memorabilia, the venue recently collaborated with Genelec to create a sound system capable of handling the band’s back catalog of heart-pounding riffs. .

Espoo is the home of the pioneering quintet who rose to fame in the late 90s and early 2000s. The Children of Bodom, which took its name from one of the most interesting cases in Finnish criminal history, the Lake Bodom Murder, has released 10 studio albums throughout his career and to see the band perform. has gained a loyal long-haired fan base that travels the world.

They continued touring until disbanding in 2019, shortly after lead guitarist Alexi Laiho passed away in 2020. Bodom Bar & Sauna opened to celebrate the band’s achievements and, in true Finnish fashion, features three restaurants. – There’s an on-site sauna alongside the standard bar offering, plus plenty of unique memorabilia from the band.

Sound was an important consideration for this project, given that it pays homage to one of Finland’s most influential death metal bands, and Children of Bodom already have a long history with Genelec. They were clearly the loudspeaker of choice. “Eight of our studio albums were recorded in Finland, completely mixed and mastered on Generec speakers,” begins Janne Wilman, owner of Bodom Bar & Sauna and former keyboardist for the band. “It’s safe to say that about 90 percent of all the music we’ve ever recorded has been monitored through Genelec speakers.

“I am a huge audio geek and purchased my first 1030 after visiting the Finnvox studio where my second album was mixed. I fell in love with the quality of Genelec’s active studio speakers and have been a user ever since. It has become.”

The Bodom Bar and Sauna is equipped with five Genelec 4030 installation speakers and four more compact 4020 models in a RAW aluminum finish. Additionally, he has one of his 7050 subwoofers and an F One subwoofer installed by Wirman and the Genelec team. Although the system is primarily used for background music and to take guests on a nostalgic journey through Children of Bodom’s discography, the bar has recently become more popular with DJs playing Wax through the system. We have also started a weekly record night where we play only. If Bodom Bar and Sauna wishes to accommodate his live musicians, this setup is also ideal for that.

“Genelec’s friendly team of experts visited us early on and recommended the 4020 and 4030 speakers,” Wirman continued. “We chose the RAW finish because we agreed that the size of the speakers were adequate for the space and that the rugged, industrial look would go well with the bar’s theme colors. It’s also a sustainable system, which I It’s very important to us.”

The speaker system covers the entire main room of Bodom Bar and the hallway leading to the sauna. The main space houses five 4030 models and a 7050 subwoofer, and the hallway has two 4020 speakers. A separate VIP lounge in the rear houses an F One subwoofer alongside two of his other 4020s.

“We chose F One so that our VIP guests could play their own music through the system if they wanted,” explains Henri Ulmanen, Sales Engineer at Genelec. “Customers can watch TV via the smart TV app, listen to their own music, and use the subwoofer remote control to change inputs and listen to background music from the bar. One’s optical input, and the bar’s background music is played on the analog input.”Additionally, the Allen & Heath AHM16 matrix processor was chosen for its versatility and uncompromising processing power.

“We feel like the guest experience is acoustically as good as it should be,” Willman adds. “We had so much fun unpacking, hanging, and wiring the product with Genelec’s most amazing installation team. We really enjoyed the whole project.”
