Unprecedented trade union mobilization: Finland prepares for major political strike
A major political strike is poised to rock Finland, with many trade unions, including the Early Childhood Teachers’ Union, expressing their intention to participate. From February 1, this coordinated action is expected to result in the closure of a significant number of childcare centers across the country, Iltaleti reports.
Participation of industrial unions
The industrial union, which has an impressive membership of around 60,000 people in 700 locations, has pledged to take part in a two-day strike. This move by industrial unions highlights the scale of impending industrial action and its wide-reaching impact.
SAK and STTK: major trade union federations
SAK and STTK, two of Finland’s largest trade union federations, have expressed their opposition to the government’s proposed reforms to labor market law. They have declared plans to protest these reforms, thereby strengthening collective resistance to the proposed legislation.
Finnish construction union joins strike
In another important development, the Finnish Construction Workers’ Union announced its participation in a strike. This could affect approximately 40% of housing construction sites in the Tokyo metropolitan area. In addition to the aforementioned unions, other major unions are expected to join the strike in the coming days, including the Paper Workers’ Union, the Transport Workers’ Union AKT, and the white-collar Aqava Union.
This large-scale industrial action is evidence of collective dissatisfaction with the proposed legislation and represents an important mobilization of the Finnish labor movement. The country is now bracing for the impact of what is expected to be a significant demonstration of worker solidarity and resistance.
