Knudsen & Siljara – Talende Strenger / Kertvat Kieret (Taragot Sounds, 2023)
Tarende Strenger / Kertvat Kieret (Talking Strings) is a collaborative album between two talented musicians from Scandinavia. Ragnhild Knudsen (Norway) and his girlfriend Pauliina Syrjälä (Finland) first met at a Nordtrad conference, where she quickly realized that the combination of fiddle and kantele created an entirely new, yet recognizable sound. The interplay of the two Scandinavian instruments resulted in a series of beautiful, evocative, mesmerizing, and masterfully performed pieces.
Since 2016, the two artists have been working together to develop a repertoire based on old Norwegian and Finnish traditional music. They playfully experiment with both the sound and structure of their songs, creating engaging arrangements that draw on Finnish and Norwegian traditions while leaving room for improvisation.
According to the artist, traditional folk music in Finland has historically focused on innovation and improvisation, while in Norway it has focused on traditional performance techniques, rhythm and intonation. In this dynamic contrast, the duo finds material for their own contemporary expression.
