King Charles II should step down and allow Princess Kate and Prince William to succeed him, critics have suggested.
This comes after Queen Margrethe II of Denmark suddenly announced her abdication in a New Year’s televised address.
Former Labor MP Stephen Pound says King Charles should “follow suit” in allowing a shake-up of the monarchy.
This clashed with royal commentator Charles Ley, who said Duchess Kate and Prince William would have to wait their turn.

“I think that’s great. He’s going to save the monarchy,” Pound said.
“The monarchy is in crisis. We’ve had the worst few years. Wouldn’t it be great if King Charles said, ‘I think it’s time for a reset?’

“Let’s give them a fresh start. Let’s start a monarchy.”
Royal reporter Charles Ley claimed that Prince Charles could still remain on the throne for decades and therefore there was no reason to abdicate.
He added that Kate and William would have to “wait their turn” as the monarchy was in “good health”.
“In terms of popularity, we mustn’t forget that The King’s Speech was the most watched program on Christmas Day,” he said.
“Documents about the background to the coronation were most viewed on Boxing Day.
“I don’t agree with Stephen, I don’t think the monarchy is in crisis.
“I think the monarchy is doing very well and should stay that way.”
Mr Pound insisted the monarchy was no longer in a position of “respect”, adding that it would be “fantastic” to get a fresh start.
“For the sake of the monarchy, for the country, just say, ‘I’m going to step back and let someone else do it,'” he said.
“Not because it’s impossible, but because we need a fresh start.”
