November 2023, data published by the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat shows that Finland had an unusually high number of deaths, 40% higher than expected based on the 2016-2019 average. This sharp rise in mortality rates is believed to be due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid aging of Finland’s population.
Eurostat has been providing monthly data on mortality rates across EU countries since the start of the pandemic, using an indicator called “relative excess deaths”.
It is calculated by comparing the number of deaths in a given month to the average monthly death rate from 2016 to 2019. According to this indicator, Finland’s excess mortality rate in November was higher than any other country monitored by Eurostat.
Seppo KoskinenA research professor at the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) pointed out that the increase in mortality rates was particularly pronounced in people over 70 years old. However, a similar increase was not seen in younger age groups.
One of the main factors influencing mortality rates in Finland is the rapid increase in the oldest age groups in the population compared to other EU countries. “About a third of the 40% excess mortality reported by Eurostat is due to the increasing number of elderly people in Finland,” Koskinen explained.
Even taking into account the aging of the population, the number of deaths in November 2023 was significantly higher than expected, and the main cause was the new coronavirus infection. The number of deaths related to the new coronavirus infection in November increased by approximately 500 from October.
Despite a sharp rise in the second half of 2023, COVID-19-related deaths began to decline towards the end of the year, returning to October levels by December. “Most of the deaths from COVID-19 in November were very elderly people with serious underlying health conditions. The median age of those who died was 84 years old, and 94% of death certificates included Chronic diseases were listed as a major or contributing cause.” Sirkka Gebeler THL guru.
Otto HerveTHL’s head of health and safety, said the very elderly and those with serious chronic illnesses have weakened immune responses, even if they have been vaccinated or have had a previous COVID-19 infection. He added that even if they were, they were now more vulnerable.
Interestingly, despite the impact of COVID-19 on mortality, the life expectancy of newborns in Finland has started to recover after declining during the pandemic. Statistics Finland reports that from autumn 2021 to the end of 2022, the life expectancy was reduced by about half a year for men and by about one year for women. However, life expectancy began to increase in 2023, recovering about half of the decline from the previous year.
Koskinen noted that life expectancy for newborns in November 2023 was about a month lower than in October, but preliminary data suggests it may have returned to pre-November levels by December.
It is important to recognize that monthly fluctuations in mortality rates are normal and can be influenced by a variety of factors, including seasonal respiratory infections. Over the past eight years, Finland’s lowest monthly death toll was in June 2018 with 4,051 deaths, and the highest in December 2022 with 6,195 deaths.
Koskinen emphasized the importance of considering a variety of factors when interpreting changes in mortality rates, and acknowledged that such fluctuations could raise concerns and questions among the public. .
