Ireland head coach Andy Farrell will be focusing on captain Peter O’Mahony’s fitness ahead of the Six Nations.
The Munster back-rower left the pitch in the second half of Saturday’s Investec Champions Cup defeat to Northampton Saints.
This came in the same week that O’Mahony was appointed Ireland’s new captain, replacing the retired Johnny Sexton.
Farrell looks forward to updates on O’Mahony.
The 34-year-old was substituted in the 66th minute of the defeat to Northampton and Munster were leading 23-16 when he was sent off.
Graham Rowntree’s side then let their lead slip away, with Finn Smith converting the penalty and Sam Graham’s try sealing Northampton’s victory.
“Pete, you’ll get an injury report tomorrow,” head coach Rountree told reporters after the game, without specifying the nature of the injury, with reports suggesting it was a hip issue.
“He’s got some little bangs. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.”
O’Mahony’s injury was not the only fitness concern for the match, with veteran scrum-half Conor Murray withdrawing before kick-off on matchday 23.
Meanwhile, Thomas Ahern, who was included in the Ireland squad as a training panellist, was taken off the pitch with an HIA after taking a nasty knee to the head, while Northampton’s Curtis Langdon was given a red card.
Mr Rountree also said details of his injuries would not be known until Sunday as Ahern will spend the night in hospital.
The news is a further blow for Ireland, who will be without wingers Mac Hansen and Jimmy O’Brien and prop Dave Kilcoyne.
further concerns
Meanwhile, Leinster fly-half Harry Byrne was unable to score in his side’s Investec Champions Cup victory over Leicester Tigers.
Byrne was suffering from an ankle injury, which Leo Cullen said may have worsened during the match.
“He’s fine. Harry did a good job for about 65 minutes, to be fair, as he didn’t train at the beginning of the week,” the Leinster manager told The Irish Times after the match.
“He came back on Thursday and that’s completely to his credit. He did well. I think he just made his ankle worse so I hope it heals quickly though. , yes, a great effort on his part.”
The Ireland squad is scheduled to gather in Dublin on Monday ahead of a training camp in Portugal.
