Ireland will play India in the Men’s T20 World Cup in the summer, becoming one of the first teams ever to play an international cricket match in New York City.
Ireland will open the tournament on June 5th against cricket powerhouse India at Eisenhower Park, 30 miles east of Manhattan.
The Irish side were selected in a five-team group including Pakistan, Canada and the United States, who will co-host the tournament along with the West Indies.
The Irish will play their first two games in New York, taking on Canada at Eisenhower Park on June 7th, then facing the United States on June 14th in Lauderhill, Florida. They conclude their group stage campaign against a red-hot Pakistan team in Lauderhill on the 20th. June 16th.
The top two teams will advance to the finals, with pre-tournament favorites India and Pakistan expected to advance from Ireland’s group.
The United States opens the tournament on June 1 against neighboring Canada in Dallas. This will be the first time a Cricket World Cup match will be held in the United States.
Co-hosts USA will provide three venues for the upcoming tournament, while six venues in the West Indies will be used. England will play all of their group stage matches in the Caribbean this summer.
Ireland qualified for the last T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in 2022, qualifying from the first group stage and then remember defeating eventual champions England in the Super 12. The result was as follows.
Sports Minister Catherine Martin described the upcoming World Cup as “exciting”, adding that there would be high expectations at cricket grounds across the country.
“It’s an exciting time for Irish cricket as we are set to play one of the first ever international matches in New York,” Martin said on Twitter.
“The combination of the hosts, USA and Canada, and cricketing heavyweights India and Pakistan. Cricket clubs across Ireland will have high expectations for this showdown.”
