Ireland’s men’s 4x100m medley relay qualified for the World Aquatics Championships final this morning in qualifying, becoming Ireland’s first relay in a World Long Course final.
The team will be joined by 800m freestyle world champion Daniel Wiffen and three-time world finalist Mona McSharry, who will compete in the 1500m freestyle and 50m breaststroke finals in Doha today. Participate in.
This morning’s medley relay final was also an opportunity for each country to secure a spot at the Paris Olympics, with the top 16 combined times from Doha and the 2023 World Championships in Japan being considered for an invitation. As of this morning, Ireland are in the qualification spots, 13th for the women and 15th for the men.
Conor Ferguson (backstroke), Darragh Green (breaststroke), Max McCusker (butterfly) and Shane Ryan (freestyle) finished 4th in their heat and 8th overall with an impressive swim time of 3:34.94. This secured a place in the medley relay finals.
Ireland still has work to do in the men’s relay, with teams required to complete two Olympic qualifying times (OQTs) to secure an Olympic spot once invitations are received.
“I’m really happy to have finished the relay,” Ferguson said after the race. I said that from the beginning of the week, and we did it and everyone came through. I think it’s one thing for us to cross that line, but we all have to drop a little bit and that’s what’s exciting and we can do so much more. right. ”
Green added: “The World Finals is something that literally everyone aspires to and dreams of and it’s huge for us individually and as a group and definitely top notch.”
Daniel Wiffen confirmed his place in the 1500m freestyle final yesterday, his third final of the week, and advanced to the final after finishing sixth in 14:54.29. The 22-year-old recorded a best time of 14 minutes 34.91 seconds in the event.
Mona McSharry, who placed fifth in the 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke finals earlier this week, placed fourth in yesterday’s 50m breaststroke semi-finals in 30.57 seconds. With this time, the Sligo girls advanced to the final in 6th place overall.
The women’s 50m breaststroke final will take place on Sunday at 4:09pm, while the men’s 1500m freestyle final will advance to the blocks at 4:16pm (Japan time). The Irish Men’s Relay will compete at 5:37pm (IRL).
