a series called full contactwill be released on January 24th and will of course (spoiler alert) focus on last season’s tournament where Ireland were crowned Grand Slam champions.
Porter is one of several players who has given cameras behind-the-scenes access to his daily life, but he’s not too keen on looking back on himself.
It remains to be seen how much footage of himself will be used in the series, in which the Leinster and Ireland prop reveals his own mental health struggles, especially considering rugby can often be problematic. I felt that this was an important topic for him to address. It is seen as having a macho culture.
“I was given the option to watch and review it, but I declined,” Porter said.
“I can’t hear myself speaking or see myself, so I just gave it to the young people at the IRFU to look at it and hear what they thought, and I said it was satisfying. I decided to accept it.
“I trust them because just being on the screens of the world is enough.”
Porter is fully prepared at the moment as he prepares for Saturday’s Champions Cup clash against Stade Français in the Leinster Cup at the Aviva Stadium, but with the release of the documentary just around the corner I know that my popularity will increase further.
“They were with me at home for two whole days and I didn’t know what to do,” the 27-year-old laughed.
“On a normal day I don’t really know what to do with myself, but when a cameraman comes after me I’m like, ‘Okay, how do I keep them occupied?'”
“So I took them to the gym for four hours and I took them for a walk with the dog. Jesus, you’re just coming to watch. If this is good television, I don’t know what is.”
“They were initially in camp with us in Portugal and then throughout the Six Nations.
“I think my sister and my wife are more worried than I am because they have been in treatment for a little while.
“They told me I had the option to see, but I didn’t tell them they could see too. We’re all in this together!
Porter has long been one of Irish rugby’s most fascinating interview subjects, so it’s no surprise that he was willing to pitch in for a Netflix series that would help grow the sport.
“There’s that side of it,” Porter said. “I’ve been watching F1, drive to surviveI thought. . . If it were me, I wouldn’t have watched it at all, but I thought it would be interesting to see behind the scenes.
“If that kind of thing gets through to people who don’t watch rugby, that’s great, but I’m a little more open.
