New England captain Jamie George is confident England can win this year’s Six Nations, but admits they have to learn quickly after defeating Italy 27-24 in Rome .
England trailed 3-2 in tries and led 17-14 at half-time, but recovered with a vital try from Alex Mitchell and two penalties from George Ford.
This was the closest Italy came to victory in the 31 Tests between the two teams, and even considering five new caps in England’s ranks, it was a shaky start to their post-World Cup rebuild. became.
While England struggled for victory at the Stadio Olimpico, Ireland looked sensational with an emphatic victory over France in Marseille the night before.

“I’m really happy for our players to change up and find a way to win games,” head coach Steve Borthwick said.
“There were some areas we could have improved on and it was great to see five players making their Six Nations debuts, which doesn’t happen very often.
“However, there were a lot of things we could improve on. Italy scored too easily, so we need to look carefully at the areas we need to improve around our defence.”
Italian manager Gonzalo Quesada took little comfort in learning that the Azzurri had come closest to beating England in 31 tries.
“When I talked to the players and coaches in the locker room, no one was happy with this close loss,” Quesada said.
“This is very important to me because I never bothered to look at the closest gap in history.
“I’m proud of the spirit the team showed. England came close to our try line many times and we thwarted them. That’s the team we want to be.”
What’s next?
England will host Wales at Twickenham in the second leg of the Six Nations next Saturday, February 10th (kick-off 4:45pm Japan time).
Italy will return to action on Sunday February 12th, kicking off at 3pm at the Aviva Stadium before hosting a visit to reigning champions Ireland.
