Jonathan Afolabi leaves Borth, home of Irish football, for Belgium

Bohemians’ Jonathan Afolabi, the league’s top scorer last season, has joined KV Kortrijk from Belgium for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Afolabi had an excellent season at Phibsborough, scoring 19 goals in 37 appearances for the Gypsies, including the opening goal in the FAI Cup final.

He was named SSE Airtricity Player of the Month for July and was also nominated for the PFA Ireland Player of the Year award.

His new club KV Kortrijk are at the bottom of the Jupiler Pro League, 11 points from safety, having scored just 12 goals in 20 games.They hope Afolabi’s arrival can bring more goals and keep the club at the top level

Speaking on signing with his new club, Afolabi said: “It has been a pleasure and an honor to play for Bose for the past year and a half.”

“I would like to thank the coaching staff, teammates and fans for making it such a fun time here.

“I will continue to move forward with many good memories and moments throughout my career that have helped me grow.

“Finally, I would like to wish the club good luck in the future. I will continue to support the players from afar.”
