Jurgen Klopp believes Caoich Kelleher should be Ireland’s number one – The home of Irish football

The Corkman started again for Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The 25-year-old started the Premier League game against Brentford just like last week, as first-choice Alisson Becker was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The Reds cruised to a 4-1 win with Darwin Nunez, Alexis McAllister, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo all on the scoresheet.

After the match, manager Jurgen Klopp praised the Irishman’s performance and questioned why Kelleher was not the Republic of Ireland’s first-choice keeper.

“He was outstanding.

“I don’t know exactly who is number one in Ireland, but if Ireland have a better goalkeeper than him then you have to respect that.”

In January, it was reported that Nottingham Forest were interested in signing the goalkeeper, but Liverpool rejected the inquiry. Klopp said after the match that Liverpool “need” Kelleher.

“He’s outstanding. We gave him more games this year than ever before.

“That makes sense because we need him and we need him with rhythm. If you look at the Ali situation now, you can see that it absolutely makes sense.

“We’ll see how long Ali is out, but Caoimh was exceptional. He was great today. It was a great performance.”

Kelleher has made 14 appearances for Liverpool this season and is expected to start next Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

In other news, the League of Ireland resumed on Friday night. Read on for five reasons to be excited about the upcoming season.
