Kazakh university teachers work to improve qualifications in Finland

ASTANA – A total of 1,800 teachers from 43 universities in Kazakhstan will gain skills through an enhanced teacher education model launched by Nazarbayev University (NU) and the NU Graduate School of Education (GSE), two leading Finnish universities. The six-month training program will be conducted in both online and offline formats. During this period, teachers will develop their competencies according to trends in modern teaching pedagogy, student-centered learning, teachers’ IT competencies, and digital pedagogy.

Additionally, 200 professors and 50 local school principals will undergo a professional development program in educational leadership. Training on comprehensive subject language learning will also be conducted for 100 teachers.

“We have just completed a very intensive teacher education project, in which 30 educational programs were changed according to competency-based education at the University of Education,” said Associate Professor Duishonkul Shamatov of NU GSE. “It was done,” he said.

On January 15, four days of parallel offline training began in the cities of Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent. Additional training in Pavlodar, Turkestan and Atyrau will continue from January 22nd to 26th.

The project involved foreign and Kazakh experts and received support from the World Bank and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan.
