The Kookaburra’s opened the Olympic year with a second successive win, defeating a brave Ireland 5-0 as they prepare for a Pro League date with in-form hosts India.
Manager Colin Batch is set to take on Pro League newcomers, all-time record holder Eddie Ockenden, first leg scorer Lachlan Sharp, Blake Govers and Jake Wetton, all with more than 1,000 caps. He gained experience and was put on the bench in Bhubaneswar.
But the depth test was successful, with Tom Craig scoring one and setting up another, Jeremy Heyward’s drag flick into the top corner and Australia leading 3-0 within 25 minutes.
After a fine solo goal from Nathan Efraums, Kai Willmott scored his second goal of the game in the final quarter, allowing Australia to slowly break down Ireland’s deep and entrenched defense.
Cairns-born Jayden Atkinson, 22, made the most of his minutes in midfield and controlled the game, but goalkeeper Andrew Charter was left out for the Kookaburra’s 4-3 series opener against Spain. He barely played in the subsequent wins.
Kai Willott puts the finishing touches on a great Australian team’s run as they record two wins in a row heading into the season opener #FIH Pro League season, against Ireland.

“When you have a large team on tour, it’s a balancing act to make sure everyone gets time,” Craig said.
“We know that it takes every member of our team to achieve a good result, whether it’s an Olympic year or any year.
“Having this many caps on the sideline is a good sign that we’re stepping up.”
Australia played India on Thursday, defeated leaders Netherlands on penalties (the Dutch powerhouse’s only loss in seven games), and beat Spain 4-1 on Sunday.
“There’s nothing like playing for India in India. It’s one of life’s great pleasures… There’s nothing like it, so I hope the crowd turns out strong,” Craig said. Ta.
The Hockeyroos (2-2) will face China (4-1) in Ruhrkula on Wednesday night (AEDT), before playing the United States (0-5) the following day.
