Neil Lennon says a decision on the Republic of Ireland’s next manager is “imminent” as a long-running saga comes to a close.
The former Celtic manager has been tipped to replace Stephen Kenny, but it is widely reported that he is not his first choice. Lee Carsley has built an impressive reputation as head coach of the England Under-21 team and is the FAI’s number one target.
On Wednesday, Shay Given expressed his belief that former national teammate Kearsley would not get the job. “He understands he’s not Lee Kearsley,” Given said of RTÉ’s Champions League coverage. “It may not be possible now, but Lee might be interested in the future.”
Gus Poyet and Chris Coleman are also strong candidates, but Lennon is the most likely candidate to take the job if Carsley passes on.
Back in November, Lennon described the job as a “great job”, adding: “I would love to have a conversation with him if I get the chance. Opportunities like this don’t come around very often.”
Appearing on Premier Sports’ Burnley v Arsenal broadcast on Saturday, he was asked when the white smoke would rise during the appointment, and said: “It’s imminent, it could be today, tomorrow or in the next few days.” It’s going to happen.”
“I don’t know what the decision is, but I’m sure it will come out soon. I don’t know the decision yet.”
This is an important week for the FAI. On Tuesday, director of football Mark Canham will unveil the association’s football pathway plan. Two days later, a delegation from the FAI will visit Leinster House for a meeting with the Public Accounts Committee.
Ireland’s next matches will be in March, when they will face Belgium and Switzerland in friendlies at the Aviva Stadium.
