In terms of TV viewing habits in 2023, only two programs were in the city. Rugby and the Late Late Show.
Patrick Kielty’s first Toy Show on November 24 topped the charts with over 1.5 million viewers, and the first edition of The Late Late Show in September also reached the top ten.
Ireland’s exploits in the Six Nations and Rugby World Cup saw them dominate the sporting top 10 and also see them qualify for the All-Ireland football and hurling finals.
However, looking beyond the top 10 provides insight beyond sports preferences.
The 11th most-watched broadcast last year was the 9 o’clock news on RTÉ One on 23 November, the day of the Dublin riots.
The highest rated scripted program was the season 2 finale of RTÉ’s Kin.
However, in Ireland, lifestyle, news, sports and reality shows dominated the top 50, with only a few scripted programs making the list.
Unusually, however, this was not the case for RTÉ Player, whose top 10 most-watched programs of 2023 included EastEnders, Home and Away, Fair City, Love/Hate and Happy Valley.
Of course, in 2023, many of us will choose streaming services over terrestrial TV. Streamers are typically quiet about viewership data, but Netflix has confirmed that The Night Agent is its most-watched show worldwide. Wednesday and Bridgerton are also among the most watched, but no regional breakdown of the information is provided.
