Liverpool have been busy bringing players back from loan and this time Marcelo Pitalga has agreed a deal to follow in the footsteps of Liverpool’s other goalkeeper.
The Reds’ loan moves so far this season have left much to be desired, with four players recalled early, but there is hope that this latest transfer will be a success.
Pitalga is a regular participant in first-team training, working alongside his compatriot Alisson as well as coaches John Achterberg, Jack Robinson and Claudio Taffarel.
The 21-year-old has featured in Jurgen Klopp’s matchday squad seven times but is expected to play a more prominent role on the pitch after joining. St. Patrick’s Athletic.
The loan to St Pat’s is the second of Pitagruga’s young career, having spent the 2022-23 season at Eighth Division club Macclesfield.
The young Brazilian will be following in the footsteps of fellow Reds keeper Vitesslav Jarosz, who starred for Ireland in 2021 and won the FAI Cup, and Liverpool will be hoping for a similar result.
Their league season only started in February, but St Pat’s are taking part in the Leinster Senior Cup this month, so Pitalga could have a chance to make an early impression.
However, it is interesting to note that neither Liverpool nor St Pat’s have made it clear whether the loan is for the Reds until the end of the season in May or St Pat’s until November.
If he stays until the end of the season, he will of course miss pre-season at Liverpool, but some could argue that consistent game time would be more beneficial.
“It feels great to be joining St Pat’s. It’s going to be a really big season and I can’t wait,” Pitagrua told St Pat’s after his loan was made official.
The young goalkeeper has signed a new contract with Liverpool before being loaned out for the second time in his career.
