MET ÉIREANN has issued a series of weather warnings as Ireland prepares for an arctic blast over the coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued an advisory across the country warning that arctic air will bring a range of winter hazards over the coming week.

The advisory, which began this morning and is in effect until noon Friday, predicts not only sleet and snow, but also severe frost and ice on roads and sidewalks.

In this week’s national forecast, Met Éireann warned that temperatures could drop to -4C on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Two Status Yellow Low Temperature/Ice Warnings have been issued today, and certain areas are also on alert.

The first will run from 7pm until 11am tomorrow and will cover counties Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

The second covers Leinster and Munster, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway and Roscommon.

Both warn of patches of ice and freezing fog, with the former also predicting sleet and snow.

A yellow snow/ice warning has been issued for County Donegal from 8pm on Monday to 11am on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a yellow snow and ice warning for Northern Ireland, which will come into effect at 3am on Monday, with up to 5cm of snow expected in some areas.

It warned it would last until 9am on Tuesday and could affect roads and railways.

Further yellow snow warnings are expected to be in place for large areas of County Antrim, Derry and County Tyrone throughout the day on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns there is a small chance of power outages, but mobile phone coverage may be affected.

It added there was a slight chance that vehicles and passengers would be stranded on snow-covered roads, rail and air services would be delayed or canceled, and some rural areas would be cut off.
