Following the much-publicized announcement of the seven artists competing in Finland’s Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) 2024, Finnish broadcaster Yle has released one lyric video for each entry. Next we will introduce: michael gabriel and nuburu with the song “Vox Populi”.
Mikael Gabriel and Estonian rapper Nuburu are among the most successful rap artists in their respective countries. Gabriel and Nuburu met through social media. Although Gabriel had heard of Nuburu, he knew nothing about Estonian rap music. Gabriel admitted that he had certain preconceived notions, but that notion was overturned when he heard Nubul’s story.

Michael Gabriel x nublu’s UMK entry is called vox potpourri. The song is about how difficult it is sometimes to know what is true and what is not in such a polarized public space. According to the artist, the song is very topical in today’s world, which is full of populism and where people endlessly wallow in their truths.
“The song deals with political and cultural divides, saying that even though we’re all entitled to our opinions, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re true. Everyone has their own opinions. You should use your voice, but you should also remember that you will be judged no matter what,” says Gabriel.
