Heavy snow and frigid conditions left hundreds of people trapped in cars in Scandinavia this week, while an avalanche killed a mother and her child in northern Finland.
A mother and child died while ski hiking in Finnish Lapland. The mother’s body was discovered on Tuesday, and the child was found dead in the snow on Thursday.
Rescuers this morning evacuated drivers from hundreds of cars stuck overnight on roads in Sweden and Denmark as heavy snow, strong winds and ice caused massive traffic jams.
In Sweden, the military mobilized tracked vehicles to assist with evacuations and deliver food and water to people stranded on highways in southern Sweden.
The Swedish Transport Agency said the affected section of the E22 road between Hoby and Kristianstad was closed to traffic on Wednesday after trucks became stuck and snow plows struggled to clear the road. He said he expects to reopen on Friday.
TT News Agency said many cars were abandoned as the evacuation continued, but they were able to return after rescue workers cut a hole in the metal fence separating the southbound and northbound lanes. It was reported that there was also a car.
