At a ceremony in Manchester on February 5, the Michelin Guide announced which restaurants in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland have been newly featured in this year’s guide. This year, 18 stores received one star. Six new restaurants have earned him two stars, and he has only one restaurant that has earned him three stars, the highest honour, the Michelin award.
The Ledbury, an upscale restaurant in London’s Notting Hill, boasts a £210 tasting menu (approximately $265) before the wine, but it’s a rare addition to Michelin’s most prestigious category, a three-star restaurant. added to the ranks. Nine existing three-star restaurants retained their status. The six new two-star restaurants include London’s Gymkhana and Birmingham’s Orphem, which became the first two-star Indian restaurants to feature in the UK list.
As usual, the one-star category attracted the most newcomers. The 18 new stores include tavern tasting counter Humble Chicken and West African eatery Akoko in London, as well as Bishop’s Buttery, a fine Irish restaurant in the town of Cashel.
London is home to more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city within the UK Guide, and consistently dominates the list. This year, 16 of the 25 new winners were from the UK capital. And six of the exclusive three-star club’s nine restaurants are in London.
Michelin last week announced its 20 new Bib Gourmands, a list of restaurants deemed to be of “great value” – in other words, cheaper – compared to those listed in its main star guide. In the UK and Ireland, his three courses at Bibb should cost up to £30 (equivalent to about $36.68), excluding drinks. The Bibb designation is also aimed at attracting more diverse cuisines to the world of Michelin, which is sometimes criticized for lacking diversity in its star guide. This year’s bibs include Ichigoichie Bistro & Natural Wine, a Japanese bistro in Cork, Ireland; Empire Empire is a London restaurant serving Punjabi and North West Indian cuisine. and Bristol-based pub, The Clifton.
This year, six restaurants were awarded the Green Star. Introduced in 2020 to reward sustainability efforts, the category includes environmentally focused companies such as Unwyn in the Welsh town of Narberth and Exmoor Forest Inn in the small British village of Symonds Bath. A series of new spots were welcomed.
Jakes Jones of Middleton Tyus’ Forge won the Young Chef Award. Robbie Ashby of Exeter’s Stage received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding hospitality. Meanwhile, Valentin Mouillard received the Sommelier Award for his work at the three-star farm-to-table tasting spot L’Enclume. Ryan McHargue won the Exceptional Cocktail Award for his bar program at Spence.
