Finland has started the new year below freezing, with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) recording a low of -33.4 degrees Celsius in Kuusamo on Monday morning.
Temperatures on New Year’s Day will range from -12 degrees Celsius to -25 degrees Celsius nationwide, with temperatures likely to be even colder in northern regions with clear skies. In the south, temperatures are expected to feel even colder due to wind chill.
Frost warnings are in effect nationwide. This means that cold weather can prevent outdoor activities and many people with chronic illnesses may experience more severe symptoms than usual.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute issued A severe cold warning is in effect across the country until Thursday.
