Northern Ireland’s new prime minister has claimed that Hamas will eventually be seen as a “future peace partner” in the Middle East.
Last week, Sinn Féin vice-president Michelle O’Neill, who became the first nationalist prime minister in history, made the claim in an LBC interview with Andrew Marr.
She said the example of the Northern Ireland peace process showed how important dialogue was to ending conflict.
The 47-year-old, whose father and two cousins were IRA members, later called for a cease-fire and described Gaza as a “graveyard of children”.
Mr. Ma asked her: “In the past, the IRA was considered a terrorist organization and could never be talked about by the British government or anyone else. Do you think you should become a partner?’
Mr. O’Neill replied: We only have to look at our own examples to see how important dialogue is and I think it is the only way to end conflicts.
“If the British Government had not talked to the Republicans, or the Republicans had not talked to the British Government in the past, we would not be in the scenario where we enjoy a peaceful and much more equal society in Ireland today.
“So what we need to see in the Middle East, especially in relation to Palestine, is that we need a ceasefire now. And we need the international community to chant for a ceasefire now and harmonize. There is.”
She also said international law should apply in Gaza and attacked the idea that it was a defensive war with repeated Israeli bombings.
Marr asked whether he would stand his ground despite knowing that Hamas said it would repeat October 7 “over and over again.”
Condemning the October 7 attack, she responded: “I urge Hamas, like all of you, to join us around the table in discussions and solutions.”
Although she was only born five years after Bloody Sunday, there is no getting away from the fact that Ms O’Neill was brought up in an IRA household. Her father was an IRA prisoner and her uncle raised money for the IRA.
Two of her cousins were IRA members who were shot dead by security forces, and one died while “on active duty” with the security forces.
In 2022, Ms O’Neill came under fire for saying there was “no alternative” to the violence during the unrest.
She also attended the funeral of a former IRA member during the coronavirus lockdown.
Ms O’Neill’s comments are in line with Sinn Féin’s historical support for Palestinians, drawing parallels to their struggle for independence from a larger occupying power.
Gerry Adams, party leader from 1983 to 2018, met with Hamas officials in 2009 despite Israel’s requests.
The former leader has long been accused of being a member of the IRA in the past and of organizing the bomb attack, which he denies.
After the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that killed 1,139 people and took 240 hostages, some Sinn Féin representatives in the Republic of Ireland turned to Palestinians without condemning the widely recognized terrorist organization. was criticized for expressing solidarity with
Mr O’Neill’s intervention comes after he was appointed as the first nationalist prime minister since Northern Ireland was created in partition in 1921.
