George David Denmark, 89, of North Falmouth, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, surrounded by his family. George was born May 13, 1934 in Quincy, Massachusetts, the eldest son of the late John F. and Genevieve (Ryan) Ryan. Denmark. He was the devoted husband of Ann (Gooding) Denmark, who preceded him in death in October of this year, just 71 days ago. They were married for 66 years. He was also predeceased by his son Christopher Denmark, sister Rosemary Murphy, and sons-in-law John Bryant and David Souza.
MA George honed his entrepreneurial skills while growing up in Randolph and then Hingham, raising chickens, selling eggs, cutting grass, and caddying for golfers. There was no idle time. He graduated from Hingham High School in his 1952 year and then graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1957. He started his own business, Denmark Pharmacy, in Pocasset in 1960, and over the years expanded his business to provide home medical equipment and surgical supplies throughout southeastern Massachusetts.
Despite the demands of his own business, George remained active in the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, serving as a board member and leader on numerous committees and campaigns. In 1974 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award and was awarded an honorary doctorate. He was also heavily involved with the American Pharmacists Association, of which he served as president from 1973 until 1974. He was a hardworking and dedicated professional and was honored to represent his fellow pharmacists.
George was a deeply religious man, attending daily Mass and serving as a lecturer and Eucharistic minister at both St. John’s the Evangelist in Pocasset and St. Luke’s in Boynton Beach, Florida. At LaSalette Shrine in Attleboro, Massachusetts, he served as a member of the board of directors and chairman of the advisory committee. George served as pastor of the Fall River Cursillo Movement for many years.
George deeply loved the Cape Cod community. He served on the board of Bourne Health Board (1963-1973), the Cape Cod Bank and Trust, and was also a trustee of Falmouth Hospital (1983-1993).
George was an avid and accomplished golfer who started playing golf very early in his life and continued to play into his 80s. Working as a caddy in his youth only deepened his bond with the game, and he went on to serve as a member and president of both Pocasset Golf Club and Atlantis Golf Club (Atlantis, Florida). became. If George isn’t on the golf course, you can find him working outside in the garden. George and Ann spent over 30 of his winters in Florida and developed many lasting friendships. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
Above all, George loved his family. He is survived by six children: Priscilla Bryant of Pocasset, Marie Iarocci Sousa of Providence, R.I., Elizabeth Taylor and her husband Michael of Chesapeake, Va., and David Denmark and his wife Lisa of Yarmouth Port, North. •Timothy Denmark and wife Erin of Falmouth and Ann Marie Myers of Chespeak, Va.; He is survived by 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jay (Cheryl) Denmark, sister Jane Marr, and many nieces and nephews. George instilled in his family a strong work ethic and a solid sense of celebration. He encouraged large gatherings at his family home in Katomet, especially around holidays. Rest in peace, Dad. You are at home with mom, we love you!
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Chapman Funeral Home and Crematorium, 74 Algonquin Avenue, Mashpee. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at St. John’s the Evangelist Church, 841 Shore Road, Pocasset. Burial will be private.
