An orange rain warning has been issued for south-west Ireland in preparation for Storm Gerrit.

A further orange warning for west coast winds will be in place from 6pm on Wednesday.

The rain warning for Kerry and west Cork will begin at 8pm on Tuesday, remain in place throughout Wednesday and end at midnight.

Ms Alien said very heavy rain was expected on Tuesday night, with more heavy rain expected on Wednesday.

“Localized flooding is possible,” the forecaster said.

An orange wind warning covers County Galway. It will run from 6pm Wednesday to 6am Thursday.

Dr Alien said there would be very strong westerly winds in the county. Forecasters said coastal flooding was likely due to strong winds and spring tides.

A status yellow warning for wind and rain will be in place for the rest of the country until midnight Wednesday night.

Heavy rain is expected on Tuesday night, followed by heavy rain on Wednesday.

Met Eireann reiterated the warning that localized flooding is possible in areas under yellow warnings.

Winds are expected to pick up from the south on Tuesday night, turning southwesterly on Wednesday.

Ms Alien said the combination of strong winds and spring tides could cause coastal flooding in some places.

A yellow wind warning is in place for Clare, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo areas from midnight until 4pm on Thursday.

The Irish Road Safety Authority (RSA) has urged road users to use caution when driving while the warning is in place.

The Met Office for Northern Ireland has issued a yellow wind and rain warning for the entire region from 2am to 10am on Wednesday.

British forecasters said there could be delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport, and some homes and businesses could be flooded.

It also raised the possibility of short-term outages of power and other services in some areas.
