You now have the opportunity to acquire a very special and especially royal piece of art when a painting of none other than Queen Margrethe goes up for live auction. Queen Margrethe’s artwork has long been known to the public and since the 1980s many of Her Majesty’s works have been exhibited at numerous exhibitions both in Denmark and abroad, including ARoS, ARKEN and Brandts Klædefabrik. Ta. However, it is extremely rare for her queen paintings to come up for sale.
“We are very excited to offer this work by Queen Margrethe II, which is a testament to her immense passion and prolific work for the arts and creative works. Although her great work in the field has long been known to the public, it is extremely rare to see her work at auction.”

personal gifts for court sheriff
The painting was created in 1988 and was a personal gift from Queen Margrethe to the then Marshal of the Court, Hans Sorvhej (1919-1989), and has remained in his family’s possession ever since. These are the works from the year she officially started exhibiting them. Although her exhibition list is surprisingly long, her work is rarely sold. As a result, only a few paintings, like this one, are available directly from people who had close relationships with the Queen.
“The story of Queen Margrethe II and her work unfolds across a wide range of fields, including visual art, scenography, decoupage and costume design. It is a very personal world of art.”

love for art
Queen Margrethe II was fascinated by creative work from an early age and continued this interest into adulthood. Her Queen’s artwork became known to the public after Her Majesty the Queen designed the annual Christmas seal in 1970, and in the late 1970s she created Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings. I created a prototype of the illustrations under a pen name.
