Plans for 100MW hydrogen plant in Finland for electronic fuel production, heat recovery, etc. |

Must read

Power company Oulu Energy plans to build a 100MW electrolytic hydrogen plant in northern Finland for the production of electronic fuels, heat recovery and oxygen absorption.

The project, to be established in Oulu’s La Anila industrial area, will include a 100MW electrolysis plant, carbon capture equipment, hydrogen and carbon dioxide storage, and processing to produce methane or methanol.

As Oulu Energy’s first hydrogen project, the fuel produced from the plant is specified for use in road, maritime and air transport applications.

In addition to low-carbon fuels, the partners expect the site to produce between 200 and 400 GWh of thermal energy per year, which could be fed into the district heating network, as well as by-products from electrolysis. It is said that raw oxygen may be recovered for industrial use. .

Kimmo Arturkila, Oulu Energy’s development director, said thermal energy represents about 10-20% of Oulu’s annual district heating demand.

In addition, the project aims to investigate the possibility of recovering biogenic exhaust gas for local industry and power plants in the further processing of hydrogen.

P2X Solutions is currently beginning the development phase of the project, with a final investment decision expected in fall 2025. The companies say the site could be completed as early as 2028.

Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions, said: “We are very pleased to be able to move forward with this joint project that shows that green hydrogen can also be a solution for reducing emissions through heat generation.”

Earlier this week (February 13), P2X Solutions and German electrolyzer OEM Sunfire announced the successful installation of a 20MW electrolysis plant in Harjavarta, Finland, ahead of the start of green hydrogen production in 2024. did.
