Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who shocked many on New Year’s Eve, announced that she will abdicate the Danish throne on January 14th.
In his abdication speech, His Majesty said, “I have decided that now is the right time.”

Margrethe II ascended the Danish throne on January 14, 1972, following the death of her father. Some royal analysts argue that the current turmoil surrounding Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary may have influenced her historic decision. Still, some point to the Queen’s statements, particularly the one the Queen shared about how her lower back surgery in early 2023 led to her thinking.

Despite the king’s stated reasons, rumors of an “infidelity” surrounding his soon-to-be successor have also been making headlines alongside the announcement of his abdication.
