Queen Mary, on her first visit outside Denmark since King Frederick’s accession to the throne, enjoyed an exciting match between the Danish and French national handball teams.
The mother-of-two, who turns 52 on February 5, competed in the men’s EHF Euro 2024 final at the LANXESS Arena in Cologne, Germany, on Sunday.
Mary looked elegant in a burgundy Alexander McQueen suit paired with a cream blouse and black wide-leg trousers for the sporty outing.
Queen Mary shared a snapshot of the inside of the arena from her seat in an Instagram post, saying: “It was a very close race. The picture here was taken just before the second half started.”
“It was a great final…a good fight against Denmark. It was a close and nerve-wracking battle to watch. It was the result of everyone’s great efforts at the European Championships. I am honored to present them with the silver medal. ,congratulations.”
Reigning Olympic champions France defeated Denmark 33-31 to win their fourth European men’s handball title.
It was Queen Mary’s first solo engagement since her husband King Frederick’s reign began on January 14.
The 55-year-old King of Denmark, known for his love of sports, did not go to Germany with his wife.
