The Republic of Ireland Under-15s used County Wexford as their home base for an international tournament last week, winning three from four games, with games played at Ferrycarrig Park, North End United and Gorey Rangers’ grounds. .
And with William Doyle part of the coaching crew, there was a local feel in the backroom for the boys in green.
Ireland defeated Hungary 12-11 on penalties in an entertaining game at Hollygrove on Friday, but the second team lost 2-1 to Cymru in Ramstown.
In the opening match, played at North End at 10.30am, Hungary took the lead with a penalty just after the half-hour mark, before Bohemians defender Curtis Egan volleyed home the equalizer just before half-time.
The match ended 1-1 and went to a penalty shootout.
All players from both teams were successful from the spot, with Shamrock Rovers’ Victor Ozianvuna, who took Ireland’s first penalty, having another chance to score.
And as Hungary missed their 12th attempt, his kick was the winner, giving William Doyle’s Ireland team victory.
Ireland’s second game of the day, between Ireland and Cymru, was moved from Ferrycarrig Park to Gorey in the north of the county, but the visitors took the lead in the 29th minute when Kiano Conaty found space for a header. We felt most at home.
In the second half, Simle doubled their lead with a goal from Alfie Jones in the 48th minute, giving his team space.
Ireland got a deserved goal in stoppage time when Club Kildare’s Sam Cooke rose highest and found the net.
On Wednesday, one side beat Hungary 2-0 at North End, before Ireland’s second team beat Cymru 3-0 at Ferrycarrig Park.
Joel MacPhail and Samuel Ogunbe scored the first equalizing goals, with goals later in the day from TJ Molloy, Niall Sullivan and Desmond Armstrong (penalty goal).
