Snow and ice warning issued for eight counties

Must read

With weather warnings remaining in place for eight counties, Met Eireann has warned of “very dangerous” travel conditions, with ice and snow expected in some areas.

Weather warnings were in place for much of the country this morning, with widespread rain turning to sleet and snow in parts of the central, western and northern regions, causing delays for commuters in many areas.

A status yellow snow and ice warning is in place for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo.

Restrictions will remain in place until 8 p.m., during which time dangerous driving conditions, poor visibility and icy untreated roads are expected, the Eireann Region said.

There are no significant problems or heavy snow reports in the Northwest.

Some people in South Sligo woke up to snow and sleet on their cars this morning. In Donegal, all main roads will be paved and cleared from 6am.

Met Eireann meteorologist Aoife Keeley warned of “very dangerous” travel conditions, with freezing and snow expected in some areas.

He told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that snow would remain in some parts of the north and north-west, while other parts would see a mix of rain and sleet.

Even if the snow does accumulate, it won’t be very deep, “a few centimeters at most,” he said.

Hazardous travel conditions are expected in the northern half of the country until 8 p.m.

Road users are urged to use caution on unpaved roads due to poor visibility and icy conditions.

A yellow rain warning for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath, Wexford and Wicklow, which was due to remain in place until tomorrow morning, has been lifted.

In the west, motorists should use extreme caution when traveling as sleet and surface water is falling on some roads around north Mayo. Some patches of ice have been reported between Ballina and Belmullet.

Elsewhere, snow is starting to fall around Castlebar and Westport, but all routes around the town remain passable.

However, the exposed section of the N5 between Tarlow and Westport can also cause problems, although care must be taken, especially on secondary routes.

Further south, around Claremorris, sleet and rain are making driving conditions even more difficult. Heavy rain is expected to fall across County Galway, potentially further disrupting the morning commute.

In Northern Ireland, the Met Office has issued a yellow snow and ice warning for Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

This situation will continue until 6am tomorrow.

The forecaster said bands of rain, sleet and snow would cause travel disruption to parts of Northern Ireland today and into tomorrow.
