The country is bracing for its second storm in three days, with several weather warnings in place and damaging wind gusts expected.
Cleanup efforts from Storm Isha are still continuing as Storm Jocelyn is expected to make landfall later Tuesday.
After Storm Isha, 45,000 ESB customers remain without power and more than 190,000 customers have had power restored after an outage.
However, the ESB says progress on repairs could be hampered later today due to the arrival of Storm Jocelyn.
Jocelyn’s arrival could bring even more damaging wind gusts and disrupt travel. The recent Storm was his 10th to be named this season.
Two status orange warnings for Galway, Mayo and Donegal are in force from today, with Met Eireann warning that the storm will bring “very strong south-westerly to westerly winds and severe and damaging gusts”.
Weather forecasters warn:
- Large coastal waves with overtopping waves
- very strict travel conditions
- fallen tree
- power line damage
- Damage to already weakened structures
The warning for Galway and County Mayo will be in force from 5pm on Tuesday until midnight, while the warning for County Donegal will be in effect from 6pm on Tuesday until 2am on Wednesday.
The rest of the country will be under Yellow Wind Warnings at various times.
The yellow alert for most of the counties of Leinster, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Cavan, Monaghan, Tipperary and Roscommon will be in place from 2pm to 2am on Wednesday.
Clare, Kerry, Galway and Mayo counties are under a warning from 10am as Storm Jocelyn moves in from the west.
The final yellow warning has been issued for counties Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo and will come into effect at midday and remain in place until 5am.
Met Eireann’s Joanna Donnelly warned of another very windy day ahead.
“These strong winds will indeed affect many parts of the country until this afternoon,” Mr Donnelly said.
“If we look inland, especially in the mid-afternoon, we can expect strong winds to blow through the center of the country from around noon.
“Orange level winds will be coming in a little later to the west and northwest, but it’s going to be windy and it’s going to be a very windy day all day.”
Since yesterday, 178,000 homes, businesses and farms have been reconnected, but the ESB said there was still much work to do for repair workers.
ESB’s Brian Tapley said: “Unfortunately, 57,000 homes, farms and businesses are still without power this morning, so our staff has assembled and is ready to hit the ground running again this morning.” .
“Additional crews will be sent to the most affected areas, particularly the North West, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Cavan, which have been severely affected by the storm.”
