PARIS (AP) – Denmark and Sweden are bidding to host the 2029 Women’s European Championship, the federations announced Thursday.
They are no longer with their Nordic neighbors Norway and Finland, as they were defeated by Switzerland in the final vote by UEFA’s executive committee last year, which confirmed the four-nation participation in the 2025 competition.
The 16-team, 31-game tournament must be held in up to eight stadiums.
Football leaders from Sweden and Denmark announced their bid in Paris after UEFA’s annual general meeting, with both sides supporting president Aleksandar Ceferin in a potentially controversial vote on extending his term.
Earlier at UEFA’s General Assembly, Norway was one of three to vote ‘no’, along with England and Iceland, in an attempt to separate the issue of term limits from the bloc’s vote on broader legal reforms.
Ceferin approved all proposed legal changes and announced them at a press conference after the meeting. He won’t be a candidate in 2027 In an election that could have extended the president’s term to 15 years.
Ceferin’s UEFA senior vice president is Sweden’s Karl-Erik Nilsson. Denmark’s Jesper Møller is also a member of UEFA’s executive committee and chairs the legal committee that led the changes.
Norway is one of the few World Football Federations whose president is a woman, former international player Lise Klavenes.
Norway are two-time European champions in women’s soccer, with Sweden winning the first tournament in 1984. Denmark has never won the championship.
UEFA has not yet launched an official bid for Women’s Euro 2029.
