Originally opened in 1992 by the Padrosa family, Teleferic introduced pintxos to Barcelona. Pintxos literally mean “spikes” and are small snacks commonly found in bars, always served on toothpicks or skewers.

Pintxos and the Padrosa family both hail from the Basque region of Spain, and the skewered snack was an integral part of Basque food culture before being popularized in Barcelona. Many years later, brothers Xavi and Maria Padrosa took over from their parents and expanded the business to the United States.

Teleferic is the name given to the famous cable car that connects the sea and the mountains in Barcelona. Literally translated into English as “cable car,” this restaurant prioritizes transporting people to Spain wherever they go. They take every element of their restaurant from Spain and are dedicated to serving authentic Spanish food and culture. When you enter from San Vicente Blvd., it looks like any other restaurant in LA. But as soon as the door closes behind you, you are transported to Barcelona’s beachside. Co-owner Maria Padrosa is responsible for the clean, sophisticated interior design, which includes neutral colors, basket lampshades, and lush plants. This effect is undoubtedly due to the fact that all materials and all furniture are imported directly from Spain.

Each ingredient used in the kitchen is also imported from Spain, and the dishes are completely homemade and made from scratch. The employees are also Spanish, a testament to our commitment to authenticity and shared culture. “When you go to a restaurant, you can feel the Spanish atmosphere. It’s not just because we bring people in, everything we buy is from Spain and that’s why we I think it’s one of the best-kept secrets of the business,” said COO David Linares. Teleferic makes its own sangria and wine and also has its own winery in La Rioja, Spain.

El Mercat will open next to Teleferic in early February. Customers can purchase nearly all of the restaurant’s products, and all products, from ingredients to paella kits, are sourced from Spain. It’s their version of farm-to-table and “another part of us sharing our culture in America,” while adding further authenticity to the brand. Although exact dates have not yet been determined, everyone is welcome to attend the grand opening, which will feature live flamenco music, free snacks, and other activities.

Although it’s not Teleferic’s first store in the U.S., it opened its first store in LA in February of this year. Brentwood is “family-friendly and welcoming,” Linares said of the choice. “We know there are a lot of people in Brentwood who have traveled to Spain and appreciate the food and culture.” But Teleferic’s doors are open to everyone.
