Queen Margrethe of Denmark abdicated on Sunday after 52 years on the throne.

The 83-year-old former king announced his intention to hand over the throne to his eldest son, Frederick X, in his annual New Year’s Eve speech.

She did not give a specific reason for her decision, but said that her back surgery in February had led her to think about the future of the Danish monarchy.

Margrethe was crowned in 1972 at the age of 31, following the death of her father, Frederick IX.

The royal family is known for their bold fashion sense, and their quirky and unique wardrobe was recently praised by The Telegraph’s senior fashion editor, Caroline Leeper.

This will come as no surprise to anyone who knows her work as an artist and costume designer. Margrethe has been an accomplished artist since the 1970s. According to the Danish royal family’s website, she illustrated a reprint of “The Lord of the Rings” in 1977. Most recently, Margrethe designed the sets and costumes for the August 2023 Danish film “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction,” Town & Country reported at the time.

Here are the most iconic costumes worn by Margrethe during her reign.
