- Britain ranks 20th with a score of 71/100, its lowest score ever.
Britain has been given its worst ever score in a global corruption report.
The annual survey by anti-corruption group Transparency International ranks 180 countries on a scale from 0, which is “very corrupt,” to 100, which is “very clean.”
However, although the UK has historically been ranked very favorably by the expert panel, it has fallen in recent years, finishing in a lowly 20th place with a score of 71/100.
This is a further two points down on last year’s total of 73 points, when the UK was ranked 18th, and its lowest score since the index began in 1995.
And perhaps more worryingly, the UK has consistently recorded a downward trajectory, experiencing a 6-point decline over the past five years.
Transparency International said this was due to potential corruption in the awarding of personal protective equipment contracts during the pandemic and the perception that public accountability has weakened.
Meanwhile, the Nordic countries maintain their top spot, with Denmark coming out on top with an impressive score of 90 points.
Finland is close behind in 87th place, with Norway and Sweden in fourth and sixth respectively.
Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) measures perceptions of public sector corruption around the world, based on analysis of various datasets conducted by experts and businesspeople.
The 2023 edition released earlier this week is depressing, pointing to widespread declines in the enforcement of the rule of law, while corruption remains unreduced.
The global average stands at just 43, with the majority of countries making no progress or declining over the past decade.
Additionally, 23 countries fell to their lowest scores ever this year.
“Since 2016, there has been a decline in justice and the rule of law globally. The rise of authoritarianism in some countries has contributed to this trend, and has constrained governments even in democratic contexts.” mechanisms have been weakened,” the report said.

The UK is not the only European democracy to record its lowest score ever. Sweden (82), the Netherlands (79) and Iceland (72) are all lower on this index than previously.
The CPI report found that Europe’s high score was marred by “weak accountability and political corruption”, which led to “narrow interest groups having too much control over political decision-making and It is speculated that this is the cause of a loss of trust in the system.
Regarding the UK in particular, Transparency International said scandals surrounding the awarding of personal protective equipment (PPE) contracts during the coronavirus pandemic contributed to the lower score.
