Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gramm this week visited Bodø Airport, where Norway’s F-16s, which are used for airspace defense, are based. Norway is transferring two F-16 fighter jets to Denmark to train and educate Ukrainian fighter pilots. Norway is also providing 10 instructors to assist with training and education. “The F-16’s contribution in the defense sector is simply impressive,” said Defense Minister Guram.
The Norwegian government has decided to support the development of a modern air force in Ukraine, with the long-term goal of establishing a permanent defense without the need for international support. This is crucial for Europe’s security and stability. This assistance will be provided through several international assistance frameworks led by the United States, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Norway has decided to join Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands in donating F-16s to Ukraine, and pilot training and education will also be an important part of the donation. The Ukrainian pilot has flown several Russian/Soviet fighter jets and will now be trained to fly the West’s cutting-edge F-16 fighter jet. At the same time, Ukrainian technicians will receive training in Denmark, the United States and Belgium. “Partners and allies will work together towards the goal of creating a modern and durable air force in Ukraine,” Gram said.
Training of Ukrainian fighter pilots to be carried out in Denmark
The Norwegian Air Force has already announced the instructors who will take part in the training in Sklydstrup. The program is multinational and led by Denmark. The scope of the deployment to Denmark will be determined through dialogue with other partners in the program, the Norwegian Defense Minister said.
Ukraine has long requested assistance in creating a modern air force. This is necessary for the country to guarantee security. Such independent Ukrainian capabilities are also vital to broader European stability and security.
Last week we wrote that Britain had confirmed that an initial group of Ukrainian pilots had completed basic training with the Royal Air Force and moved to Denmark for F-16 pilot training. The donated fighter jets are part of international efforts, including Norway’s recent commitment of $31 million for air defense systems. Additionally, a European F-16 training center opened in Romania in November, with the first five Dutch F-16s deployed. In addition, the Netherlands has promised to transfer at least 18 F-16 Fighting Falcons to Kiev in the future.
