The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Wind Energy Technology Office (WETO) and Innovation Fund Denmark will provide a $4.2 million opportunity to advance floating offshore wind power.
The joint U.S.-Denmark funding opportunity aims to advance the global floating offshore wind industry by fostering collaboration and increasing the impact of research and development in each country.
This proposed funding opportunity will focus on research to improve mooring techniques and methods used to secure floating platforms to the seabed.
WETO and the Danish Innovation Fund will each contribute approximately $2 million, and the implementation team must include both U.S. and Danish organizations collaborating on each winning project.

“About two-thirds of the United States’ offshore wind energy potential exists in waters too deep for today’s fixed-bottom wind turbine foundations and requires floating platforms instead. DOE and Danish Innovation This partnership with the Foundation will advance floating offshore wind research and development to advance each country’s respective climate goals. This initiative will reduce the cost of floating offshore wind in the United States by 2035. “Floating Offshore Wind Shots” aims to reduce wind emissions by 70% in 2020,” said Geri Richmond, Department of Energy’s Under Secretary for Science and Innovation.
“Climate change cannot be solved by one great idea, one company, or one country alone. It will require many new initiatives and collaborations from different sectors working in the same direction.” Innovation said Anders Eldrup, Chairman of the Fund Denmark.
DOE and the Danish Innovation Fund are inviting proposals that address five thematic areas:
- Compatibility strategies for mooring, cabling, and coexistence
- Highly reliable mooring device that can be mass produced
- New station maintenance systems and components
- Mooring equipment monitoring and inspection technology
- Open topic: Research and development to support broader mooring systems for industry-scale deployment of floating offshore wind energy.
On this occasion, it is scheduled to be released this spring.
This announcement builds on previous collaborations between DOE, the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, and the Danish Innovation Fund signed in 2021.
